Suspected gunman displayed white-supremacist symbols on ammunition during the deadly assault that left 49 people dead and dozens injured

Forty-nine people have been killed and 48 injured after two mass shootings at Christchurch mosques yesterday for NZ.

The death toll could rise as some of the people with gunshot wounds being treated at Christchurch Hospital are critically injured.

Security is still tight in the area around the two mosques - Al Noor Mosque on Deans Ave in Riccarton and Linwood Masjid in Linwood.

All mosques around the country have been closed.

The dead include a five-year-old girl and her father who were chased by the gunman and shot.

Three people are in custody, and one 28-year-old man is to appear in court this morning charged with murder.

A man who posted a video of the attack has been identified by a former co-worker in Australia as Brenton Tarrant.

Police said none of the group were on security watchlists in New Zealand or Australia.

If you know any kiwis, I know we may seem quiet and out of the way but this is a big deal so check in on them. I am fine btw just freaking scary that this is happening in our apparently peaceful chill country. The last shooting with this many deaths was the Las Vegas shooting...

This is just awful.

And what's most awful is it's not even shocking news any more.

Anyone who values their own sanity should not read this piece of shit's "manifesto" before he went and slaughtered innocent people. It's literally full of vile hatred. :@

I have watched the videos the killer taped that are circulating. So unbelievable they seem fake, like a video game.

Is he still alive? I haven't had chance to follow it today.

Absolutely disgusting, no matter your views on who/what might be superior there is no call EVER to attack an innocent person, let alone nearly 100. Utter lunacy and it's sad that people like this can get their hands on the tools to do it

This is incredibly sad. I don't and will never understand how (or why) people can do things like this.

Just seen the New Zealand PM, a supposed champion of women's rights, in a hijab.

You're right we should all go tell her what she can and can't wear. Also what's that got to do with literally anything at all

Just seen the New Zealand PM, a supposed champion of women's rights, in a hijab.

She wore it out of respect, pure and simple. This has nothing to do with women's rights.

You think women should have to cover up for men in this day and age to show respect?

What an outdated view.

You're the only person who's attempted to dictate how a person should dress here

I don't think women should be expected to cover up in 2019 to show respect/please men.

And that's me dictating? Have a word with yourself.

No, I was on about your original comment concerning her attire which showed your clear displeasure at her wearing it as well as taking away attention from the actual issue because you'd rather be edgy and anti-everything than spend a moment caring about the victims of a massacre. No-one here has said she or anyone else has to cover up, you made that up entirely.

I'm entitled to make an observation, just as you did when you posted this observation about guns on page one.

New Zealand bans military style semi-automatics and assault rifles after Christchurch shootings.

Related parts used to convert these guns into MSSAs are also being banned, along with all high-capacity magazines.

edited: not actually banned just reclassified so only those with a category E license can use them which is a very small amount of people
