I've had an awful cold for the past week and I work in a hospital but up here they're currently only testing those who have been to infected countries or been near a person with confirmed coronavirus so one hand we're letting it spread by not testing more people but on the other those who have been tested and have been to an infected country or near an affected person, majority of them haven't contracted it sooooooo one minute i'm omg this is serious the next eh not really.

just been to asda and the toilet paper and tissue aisle is totally cleared out. now i'm not one to care about panic buying or panic about cleanliness but i am worried we end up going out of stock and i'll run out of toilet paper when there's none to buy and AHHHHHHHHHHH. wish we'd all just calm tf down tbh

also plz don't give it to me i want my haircut done next week and i have like really important psych appointments and shit so like i'll die mentally as well if i get it

I think the panic buying is a bit over the top - I understand it isn't a nice virus to have, but it is very closely linked to the flu so it is hard to tell whether someone has it or not.

As I work dealing with the public, it has now become a daily risk - I do believe a good number of people here in the UK will catch it before it will get down. However, with viruses, it will just develop and overcome what is thrown at it - this could become the new common cold.

I assume that's quite an old post. As there is more than 80k causes world wide now.

https://ig.ft.com/autograph/graphics/coronavirus-map.svg?frame=webM

https://ig.ft.com/autograph/graphics/coronavirus-map-europe.svg?frame=webM

I hope these actually embed correctly.

We should all be careful - Obviously don't go crazy and start filling your house up with toilet roll etc. But at least make sure you are washing your hands and making sure you do. There will be quite a lot of people who will be more vulnerable to this and it's not just the over 50s.

I don't know why people keep going on about other viruses like the flu etc. We know about the flu, we've had a lot of time to research the flu. The problem we are having is when the health systems can no longer cope. It's why certain countries are going into the delay phase.

Keep those hands clean and away from your faces and we can hope for the best :P

Triz
10-03-2020, 07:52 PM
Yeah it was pretty old, but still shows how less threatening it is than other viruses or diseases.

Form what I've read if you're a healthy person then there isn't really anything to worry about since most of the cases that result in death are people with underlying medical conditions or the elderly.

Most people who have been diagnosed with corona virus who are healthy, have just felt a bit sick for a few days, much like the common cold.

Can't say I've done that much research on it though, only been reading the odd thing here and there.

-:Undertaker:-
10-03-2020, 10:43 PM
I don't understand the "oh it is okay, only old and sick are at risk" - Do people not care about their elderly grandparents, neighbours, family members with underlying medical conditions? If you know someone over 80, the chances are currently around 1 in 5 that they will be in a body bag if they catch this rapidly spreading disease. The Coronavirus numbers compared to the flu are incredibly frightening. It is not just like the seasonal flu. More to the point, these are the numbers with still-functioning healthcare systems - if this spreads, the mortality rate will rise way past 5% to 8%

Today the Spanish government declared a State of Emergency, the first since 1978 when Spain transitioned to a democracy.

My school closed today for a provisional period of two weeks. The supermarket shelves were running empty of meat, rice, pasta, cheese, fruit.

Worst effected countries at the moment are China, Persia, Italy, Spain and France.

seems kinda ******ed for people to be buying a months worth of food when we probably won't go into "lock down" until another few weeks time if at all. also when i had the flu last February which was literally the illess i've ever been and i was off work for a week and unwell for a further few weeks, I literally couldn't eat for around 6 days then all i could stomach was a bit of soup or ice pops so lots of food went to waste lmao

also i work with people who can barely afford to feed themselves day to day nevermind stockpile months worth of foods so i'm worried about them honestly. and it looks like i'm gonna be made to work from home quite soon so i won't even be able to help. i'm honestly not worried about myself getting it i'm worried about my 91 year old neighbour, my vulnerable clients, my disabled brother who gets EVERY disease going and has underlying heart problems

I can't say I've ever had the Flu, but I do know that when people normally tell you they've got the Flu, it's often just a common cold..
I've been ill before yea, but apparently you'll know full well when you've got/had the flu, and I can't say I recall such a time...

I've seen videos online of supermarkets being flooded and going straight to the toilet roll section, or the ready meals/pasta sections, like it was black friday lol.
A few supermarkets here in the UK have actually put limits to the amount of things you can buy, they've also updated their website to prevent bulk for certain products buy for the time being..

It's madness

I DEFINITELY!! had the flu last feb. it's definitely something you'll know you have. I slept most of the time, only waking up to rinse a cloth with cold water because i had a fever or go to the bathroom, and whenever i was finally able to get myself up to do either of those, i would then have to lay down on the bathroom or the kitchen floor for an hour before i could move again!! i couldn't shower much either and when i did i sat in the shower and did the bare minimum. i started feeling better about day 6 and walked to the store across the road for more ibuprofen and by the time i got back i was sweating like crazy and felt like passing out. i constantly felt like i was on a day 2 hangover, like dizzy and unable to concentrate. so yep, the flu will keep you in bed literally for a week, it's crazy. good thing is once you have it once you're supposed to be sort of immune to it again and just get milder symptoms

I'm in Spain now, yes.

Is that the confirmed guideline for all of Spain? I was wondering if it was just Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia?

And we can leave the house for work, right? My school is shut but they were allowing teachers to go into school to do work/send work to students.

I left my apartment before to go for a quick drink before the midnight lockdown kicks in... every single restaurant and bar closed. The streets deserted. I'm thinking of waiting for a few days/week to see what happens, and then possibly fly back home - surely they'll still run flights for stranded nationals?

There's also reports (ITVs Robert Peston) that the elderly (over 70s) will be told to quarantine for 4 months by Her Majesty's Government.

I'm going to pack all my non-essential stuff into suitcase tonight/tomorrow, deep clean apartment and literally be ready to bail next week. I'm 50/50 on what to do. I just can't see schools returning in 2 weeks, and there's no way I am sitting here alone for 6 to 8+ weeks with no Wifi.

I work for a small small food business where we work really hard even during the best of times to make any profit. We noticed a massive decrease in footfall last week and won't be able to keep going if there's a lockdown of more than a few weeks, or if too many people stay away...

Also dreading the idea of a lockdown like in some places in mainland europe. can't STAND having to be at home and stay inside for any longer than I have to.

Announcing that there will be lockdowns just forces people to panic and flee the worst areas, bringing the virus to whereas they end up going. That's what happened in Italy with people breaking out of the danger zones because it was leaked that they were about to be shut in, and it's not helpful to anyone
