The Countess of Avon, also known as Clarissa Eden, has passed away at the age of 101.
Wife of the 1st Earl of Avon, former British Prime Minister Anthony Eden, she was the oldest living Prime Ministerial spouse. Eden succeeded Sir Winston Churchill as British Prime Minister in 1955 following Churchill's retirement from politics, but his premiership was cut short when in 1957 Britain, France and Israel invaded the Suez Canal in Egypt, resulting in a humiliating withdrawal after American pressure scuppered the military engagement.

Her husband died in 1977, when the Earldom was succeeded by their only surviving son, the 2nd Earl of Avon who later died of AIDs in 1985 meaning the Earldom became extinct with no surviving heirs.
She recently appeared in the TV series 'The Crown' (season 2), played by actress Anna Madeley.
I only discovered a few years ago that she was still alive.
Absolutely remarkable that she lived so long after her husband's premiership ended.
RIP
