I have to say this is very surprising, I was sure she would reign until death. I'm not a fan of abdications at all.

One of my favourite reigning monarchs. Known as Daisy to friends, she is an artist and fashion designer and even draw some of the maps for J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings book series that you've probably seen before.

Her son Crown Prince Frederick will ascend the throne now, likely reigning as King Frederick X with his Australian-born wife being known as Queen Mary. This means there will now be no queens regnant currently reigning in the world.

Thanks for your long service, Daisy.

Queen Margrethe II has just abdicated and her son has ascended to the Danish throne as King Frederik X.

The streets of the capital are lined with Danes cheering the Queen for her 52 years of service.

The Danes like most of the European monarchies don't do Coronations so instead the new King will be proclaimed by the Prime Minister from the balcony of the Palace. Should happen in an hour or two from now. There are now currently no Queen-regnants reigning in the world.
