Assisted Dying is approved by Britain's House of Commons

For the first time in history, the House of Commons has voted for Assisted Dying to be legalised

It still has a long way to go, it will spend a long time in the House of Lords and also return to the House of Commons.

I'm very happy with this. It has always been my view that adults of capable mind should have the ability to decide when they wish to 'check out' of life, with a quick and easy death - avoiding what can often be months/weeks/days of horrendous suffering, of some of the worst diseases and conditions imaginable. Life is precious - but that's an individual decision to make and sometimes one can reach a point where life is not precious because it can be so unbearable.

Thoughts? Are you for or against Assisted Dying?

I would genuinely be interested to hear why 275 MPs voted no, as to their reasons and why they felt this bill should not go through.

I suspect many will feel placing such powers in the hands of the NHS is a bad move, and I have to say given the experiences I have had with the NHS and old age care, those concerns are valid especially for those without family members to overrule the nurses and doctors*.

*which I had to do only last month to ensure my Grandmother survived.

It has passed the final reading in the House of Commons. The Lords will put up one final fight.

The way I see it, those against assisted dying will still be free to die in pain and suffering from the likes of cancer, ALS and COPD - but the rest of us who can think of nothing worse than prolonging the inevitable end can have that choice of ending our suffering if we wish so.
