He's the former Governor of both the Banks of England and Canada - and he had a disastrous tenure at the BoE in my view, leading to the rampant post-lockdown inflation we've endured. He's currently not an MP either in the Canadian House of Commons - under the Westminster system you actually don't have to be in Parliament to serve in office.
Canada will have a confederal election before October of this year (at the new PMs choosing of time) so he will stand for a constituency then (or as the Canadians call them, a riding). He replaces Justin Trudeau who served as Canadian PM from 2015-2025.
Thoughts?

PM Carney met with The King of Canada earlier this week for a private audience.
The Liberals have surged in the polls now after looking at a wipe out under Justin Trudeau. We've been here before though, back in 1993 when PM Brian Mulroney stepped down after a lengthy stint in office and Kim Campbell succeeded him as PM, the ruling Progressive Conservatives surged back up in the polls only to then collapse shortly after in the General Election and end up collapsing as a political force in Canadian politics.

PM Carney requested the Governor General to dissolve the Canadian Parliament and call a General Election.
Canadians will go to the polls on 28th April. Current polling has the Liberals leading the Conservatives by a couple of points.

Canadians go to the polls tomorrow.
If the opinion polling is right, the Liberals will come top in a fourth successive election victory.

As a Canadian... Liberals need to stay in power. If Pierre gets in, he will push to annex Canada to make it part of the united states.
He has actively voted against so many programs for marginalized groups and plans to take so many more rights away.

Here's the final results. The Liberals lead a minority government short by 4 seats. Coalition or supply-and-confidence agreement likely. It's because there is a minority government that this will likely be a shorter-lived Parliament, and either the government at some point will lose a Vote of Confidence or will call an early election itself if it thinks conditions are favourable. So yeah, highly unlikely to last until 2029.
Quite a result. Pierre Pollievre, leader of the Conservatives, lost his seat despite increasing the vote share % of his party - he intends to stay on as leader. I'm absolutely delighted to say that Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, also lost his seat and has resigned as leader.
This is the first Canadian election since 1930 where both the Liberals and Conservatives have polled over 40% each in the same election.
