Queen Mother Sirikit of Thailand dies aged 93
Wife of King Rama IX, reigning 1946-2016 (70 years), has died at the age of 93 in Bangkok. The Queen Mother was the Thai equivalent of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

When I visited last summer, the public tributes were largely spent between the King of Thailand, the Queen of Thailand and the Queen Mother of Thailand. Much of the respect is invested in the Queen Mother and other heirs, rather than the King himself.
