Labour MP for Makerfield Josh Simons resigned the seat to allow Andy Burnham to run for Parliament - if he wins he is expected to mount a leadership challenge to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer

A highly consequential by-election that will decide the next Prime Minister. Sir Keir Starmer's authority has all but drained away and he is rumoured to be setting a timetable for his departure fairly soon. If Burnham becomes an MP, he's a cert to be PM.
