Billy Joe: He's a great lyricist but what he's done to Green Day is unchangeable and extremely stupid. Nvm.

No...he really doesn't. He made great music; he doesn't make great music anymore. The 10 min jesus of surburbia was an alright song, the rest was just political messages inside pop-rock.

5 punk rock artists who are better songwriters than Billy Joe:

1. Joe Strummer - (The Clash)
2. Pete Shelley - (The Buzz****s)
3. Johnny Rotten - (The *** Pistols)
4. Ian Curtis - (Joy Division)
5. D. Boon - (Minutemen)

Shut up Thrilled, that's YOUR opinion. Some other people may like their new music, (although I don't), but YOU don't decide who is better than them. Right?

I agree on the artists who are just as good as Billie, but they aren't any better than him, like you stated and obviously think :s?

I agree with Thrilled. Those 5, and of course Morissey and others ARE better songwriters than Billy Joe, altough he does write good songs. That's MY opinion. I'm not telling others to acknowledge my opinion. A few others like Robert Smith and Michael Hutchence are great too. I'm just stating that if you think that Billy Joe is one of the best songwriters you oughta compare him to others and then you'll get it.

You shut up fool. It's my opinion backed up by fact. The 5 artists I mentioned previously have written more of a selection of great punk songs than Billy Joe. Untill somebody tells me why he's better than any of them, I will stick by it.

How the hell is Joe Strummer not better than Billy Joe? Are you insane? I think you should think about what you're saying before you post little girl.

Edit: Thanks you Lewis: somebody who actually knows about real punk music.

It's fact Joe Strummer is a better songwriter than Billie Joe. It's fact Johnny Rotten is a better songwriter than Billie Joe. Obviously it's not complete fact as it can't be accurately proven but it's basic punk intelligence, douche. It's like saying Dougie from Mcfly is a better guitarist than Hendrix: you're saying it can't be proven contrary which is true, but it doesn't stop you from being a dumbas's.

I know they have wrote more but who cares? That doesn't make them any better, maybe more exprienced. And btw it's Billie, not Billy?

What? They wrote better songs for their generation than Billie Joe has. And as a matter of fact, any punk fan should care. And thankyou for pointing that out to me, it's spelt Billy here in England, but Americans like to change words/names for some reason.

You are a little girl from what I've heard. Going on about Billie Joe being better than Joe Strummer. You're basically saying he's the greatest song-writer in history? Think about it. Hey, you might of heard of The Clash? Or The Ramones? They were pretty good punk artists of the 70's and 80's incase you haven't. If it wasn't for them, you're precious Green Day wouldn't exist.
Don't tell me what to do either please, it doesn't suit you, especially when you're a Taking Back Sunday fan.

Oh whatever with your "facts". You believe what you want and I believe what I want.

I know about the clash, the ramones, the s*x pistols, they are great; they inspire most of the 1990's and this years punk rock bands; like Green Day. So don't try and lecture me, I do know about older rock bands too.

Don't call me a dumb as's either. Just because I don't fully class myself as a 'punk', I don't follow others; just because they think "Oh wow!! This person is better than him so I'll follow everyone else to look cool!", I seriously don't give a damn about what others think. I like who I like on personal choice, not on "punk intelligance" Okay?

I wasn't lecturing you dear. You can't know that much if you think Billie Joe is a better songwriter than Joe Strummer. You avoided what I said about Hendrix because that's what this argument is similar to. I showed a friend on Msn what you thought and he couldn't stop laughing at your stupidity.

It's not about "liking" or "personal choice", we were discussing who's the better song-writer. I'm not a huge fan of Joy Division, but I'll admit Ian Curtis is a better song-writer than Joey Ramone who is infact my favourite punk frontman. Same with anything else in music. Slash is my idol, but I'll admit there's been at least 30 guitarists better than him in history; 'cause I'm not an idiot basically.

I can see exactly the sort of music you like, just from you're last 10 posts or so and your sig. You don't have a clue about what genre's I'm into because I don't follow nobody.

Well one thing about what you said; the american idiot, I don't like any of them songs except wake me up when september ends. I like Dookie, warning. All of Green Day's old music. I don't care what you like, the punk intelligance or ANYTHING about following some stupid trend. Go to hell because I don't give a damn about any of that. I listen to the music that appeals to me, I don't need to listen to ALL the punk music to be a real punk. That doesn't matter to me. I don't label myself, I am who I am.

Metal is hard, otherwise it wouldn't be...metal? I'd class the likes of Pantera and Disturbed as "hard metal". Less comercial bands for starters. AC/DC and Iron Maiden are classic rock/metal if anything. Linkin' Park are "Nu-metal" which basicallly means, cra'ppy new metal with solid guitar and shouting style vocals.

As for anyone who thinks Greenday sold out and arent listening to them purely for that reason (if you truely dont like the new music AT ALL, and not just because its different, then thats ok) but if it is because they "sold out" they didnt. They became popular and will slowly fade away, like the Darkness. They didnt ask to become popular or anything like that, it just happened.

It would seem that there are 2 types of people who "like" Green Day, those who liked them in the days of Dookie, Warning, Nimrod and other older albums (which i might point out that you were probably 3 or younger when they were around) and now dont like them because of American Idiot. And the ones who have only heard American Idiot and made the show i wanted to see sell out before i could get tickets for it. There are also the ones who listened to American Idiot first and are saying they dont like the older albums because "they ****."

As for the people saying "oh yeah Green Day Rock" or babbling on about themselves liking heavy rock music and stuff like that, they all need to shut up. Greenday were Punk (probably still are, but more mainstream) or Pop-Punk (which isnt really a genre). If you like "heavy Rock" (and i dont mean Metallica which is who most people refer to), i mean Il Nino, SOAD, Slipknot, Atreyu, and many others.

Thats my rant over, i hope you are all that much more enlightened to how stupid some of you sound.

Green day didn't just "become" popular randomly. Their recently found popularity was down to their latest album which we've already discussed lots in this thread. People heard the politically fuelled pop/rock and took a shine to Green day and the album, eventually realising they'd been around 10 years. Most now pretend they were fans of Green day before the American Idiot record so they appear 'real' fans of the group.

Agreed.

Indeed. Green Day's new music is a bit heavy to be considered punk I think, more Pop-Rock. You're right about the whole rock thing sort of. Although, SOAD aren't really heavy rock, more alternative metal and I wouldn't consider Slipknot as music tbh. Metallica are heavier than SOAD.

Lol, actually dookie was my first album (Technicly my bro's because he was 7, I was 4, we both listened to it). My parents werent aware of the swearing because it didnt say it on the CD, but found out and didnt care too much since we didnt know what they were. :P I still listen to that album to this day, because it is a great album.
Some people werent aware of "old" green day, some because they didnt even bother to look up anything else, and some because they are afraid of "old" music, and want to stick with whats popular.
Another thing is the popularity of it. Have you noticed everytime they come out with a video, it starts to become really popular. The "Wake me up when septermber ends" video came out a few monthes ago, and I hadent even heared of the song before that, even though it came out last year. Now that the video is out, everyone loves it. Its all because people think its popular.

I wasnt referring to anyone in particular (except the first bit of my post for the person who started the thread).

People like fads, and most people follow what the crowd is doing, so if someone likes a song in a matter of time everyone will say they like it (whether they do or not).

I started by liking a few of their past songs, but i havent listened to that much. I dont see American Idiot as Greenday "selling out" or "worse than older music" i just see it as more music by Greenday, im not an Avid fan like some people, i just like certain music when i hear it.

I saw them live because i wanted to (and also New Found Glory were supporting, kinda like a 2 bands for the price of 1 :p).

If you ask people their favourite 5 songs, i will reckon you can tell if they were fans before or after American Idiot. (or not at all if they cant even name 5) ;)
