The History of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in 1699. Early explorers celebrated this French Holiday on the banks of the Mississippi River. Throughout the years, Orleanians have added to the celebration by establishing krewes (organizations) which host parades and balls. Carnival quickly became an exciting holiday for both children and adults.
Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and of course is celebrated on that day of the week. The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar, used by the Catholic Church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following:

Purple represents justice
green stands for faith
gold stands for power
The Mardi Gras season begins on January 6 and continues until Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. On the Christian calendar, the twelfth day after Christmas is known as "Epiphany", "Twelfth Night", or "Kings Day." It is the day the gift-bearing Magi visited the baby Jesus, and is celebrated with its own unique rituals.

Me and my friends can't make it to New Orleans, so we just throw our own Mardis Gras parties.

This and St. Patrick's Day are the greatest holidays celebrated. Followed in third is Christmas.

Well the biggest festival is there, but its not only that. Its a french holiday, translated means "Fat Tuesday" because originally there was a lot of food involved. There are many French people in New Orleans (Long explenation) so there is always a festival.

ah... well on St Patricks Day I'm 1/4 alcohol :P

I'll make sure to have my mates sing you happy birthday as loud as humanly possible next Pattie's day. Listen closely that day, I'll be the one singing out of key.

then we'll just sing louder... keep in mind this is coming from the united states so it may be kind of faint and you'll have to listen really good to hear. Chances are we'll forget the words after the first line so listen for anything and remember, I'll be the one out of key.

I think it was the day that they'd indulge themselves before they gave up something for lent. Hence the name "Fat Tuesday". My friend Julie always gives up alochol for lent... silly girl.

:O but why do they have it?

because it was the day they'd indulge themselves before lent... lol. Meaning, say if they were giving up eating candy for the 40 days and 40 nights of lent, they'd eat as much candy as they could on "Fat Tuesday".
