Your disk space has nothing to do with your memory. Your computer doesn't use your RAM to store data other than the applications open (or minimized) on your desktop. Files aren't stored in the RAM, only in the hard drive. There are two ways to decrease the amount of RAM you are using.
One would be to go to Start>Run>type "msconfig">Startup Tab and search all of those processes in this database: http://www.processlibrary.com/
Another way would just be to hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go into the processes tab and do the same thing I just said (search all of the process in that database (http://www.processlibrary.com/).
The best way, however, is to just upgrade your RAM. Vista (presuming you have vista) hogs RAM like crazy (with all of its special effects and crap like that). I wouldn't recommend running Vista with less than 2GB RAM.
To free up your hard drive, however, you will have to remove applications or clean up your pictures, files, etc.
Yea, I'm on Vista 2GB, have a rating of 3.3. - Is that good?
I also do regular clean-ups, and disabled most start-up programs.
That is Virtual Memory, it does not, will not, can not speed up your system.
