Ah... heatsink problem...

So I took the heatsink and fan off, and there was quite a lot of dust on the fan and on one of the heatsinks "grills". I took off most of the dust from the fan, but I couldn't detach the fan from the heatsink itself.

So with a considerable amount of dust removed, I put the heasink back in... I dunno if I put it in the right way or not, but does this matter?

I also screwed it down tightish - not overly tight, but tighter than it was - it was fairly loose before.

On startup my temps were 51, 45, 44 and 46 for each core... seems higher than before.

Is there a possibility that it's too tight, or that it's not in the right way?

Also, how can I take the fan off of the heatsink... it's like glued on or something, it just has some black + shaped things that aren't screws...

Edit: although now the overall temp is 40c... and each core is under 47c... meh. Still, I wanna try and clean that dust from the heatsink but its covered by the fan... would using a hoover to suck out the dust be OK, or would it damage the parts?

I think I buggered it up though... whilst looking for dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. And I found some fat free, low calorie dust. I just opened the case again and I found some thermal paste on the top of the fan, in a position where it's almost impossible for it to get... I've NO idea how it got there... :S

BTW my fan is a Coolmaster CM12V WOWOWOW - I read it's a crap fan used for processors with 1Ghz of power lulz. I want a new fan anyway, this one is very loud... and vibrates a lot... anybody recommend me a quite but cheapish fan and heatsink?

When you put your heatsink back on did you apply thermal paste beforehand?

No 'cos I don't have any, although there was a fair amount on the processor and the bottom of the heatsink.

Temperatures have been alright... doing a torture test one core reached 65c.

You should get some new thermal paste; use rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol to remove the current thermal pastes' residue from the processor and heatsink and then apply a grain of rice sized amount (or pea method) - Spread and then re-attatch the heatsink.

I suggest Arctic Silver 5 if you want some good paste that will bring down your temps by 5*C + more if the HSF hasn't been seated properly.

I just use some paper kitchen towel or dry bog paper, works a treat to be honest.
