Physics help needed thanks

i have been on holiday and am confused on where to start and this is due tommorrow

1) if a gale is blowing 30ms-1 from the west, what is its component in a northerly direction ?

2) if a tide flows north eastwards at 5 ms-1, how quickly is a floating log carried
i) to the north ii) to the east


any help much appreciated

1) no component in the northely direction, as blowing west.
think about it as separate vertical (north and south) and horizontal (west and east) components.

from west, means 0 degrees to horizontal...
so northerly (vertical) component is 30sin0 = 0.
westerly (horizontal) component is 30cos0 = 30

2) can't work out without any distances? to the north how far? to the east how far?

2) The distance per second is given, so take it from there.

North-eastwards is 45 degrees from both the east and north directions, so you have the angle and the hypotenuse of the triangles. Take it from there.

2)i) To the North = 5*sin(45)
ii) To the east = 5*cos(45)
