Working in Mcdonalds

So, I am 18 years old and decided that I need to get a job. I applied for Mcdonalds, had my first ever interview and was then succesful to the next stage. I had an On-The-Job evaluation which involved me handing out balloons to children, this was because the shop was empty. The Mcdonalds I hope to be working in is a franchise and it's much smaller than other Mcdonalds. So I had my evaluation, literally 30 seconds of speaking to the manager and said I would definielty be recieving a call and he would see me soon.

Obviously the next bit is whether its embarrasing to work in Mcdonalds. For someone like myself, I honestly would answer yes because if people I know walk in and see me or some good looking girls, than Id think to myself "oh no!". So I can accept the banter, because I then realised a job is a job and money is money. I'm looking for experience, and something productive to do. With this customer service skills I can then look for other jobs because I ultimately want to be a bar staff.

Does anyone else work in McDonalds, or planning to?

McDonalds always has a bit of a reputation with it, but frankly a job is better than no job.

Yeh McDonalds was defiantly embarrassing when i was 18, if i saw any of my friends work their i'd most likely laugh, but then you grow up and realise money is money, now all my mates who don't have jobs struggle to come out with the rest of us as they feel left out as they never have money

I don't plan to work in McDonalds and I definitely hope I never do - I just can't cope with the smell lol and being around fast food all day wouldn't make me feel very well haha. I don't think embarrassment comes into it though.

I can sorta understand why some people would consider it embarrassing but I don't think you should. At the end of the day, a job is a job and we can't all start off in a 'decent' office job or somewhere higher up the chain can we? Considering jobs are *supposedly* hard to get these days, it's good that you've found one. Admittedly, Fast Food restaurants don't seem the nicest place to work (my 16 year old friend works at McDonalds and she has to wash her hair an awful lot simply to get the smell of Fast Food out of it because it's so potent) but beggars can't be choosers really.

If any people come in there and start 'banter' over the fact you work there, then they are very likely going to people who don't have jobs themselves. As you said, it gains you experience and is a start at least... and at least you're earning money.

Long story short, I personally wouldn't consider working there but I don't find it embarrassing if someone I knew/if I did end up working there (the Fast Food industry is massive and is growing rapidly so the chances of losing your job via redundancies are very low).

I was in the same sort of situation as you, I had just left college (first year) and had no income whatsoever (was 16 at the time) and saw KFC wanted workers so I applied, a little embarrased in doing so but regardless I needed some income so I applied. I didn't get a call back and spent the summer bumming around, I then changed college (was a 1 year course) and got an apprenticeship and got £95 a week (around £2.50 an hour) but got upped to £181 a week when I turned 19. The government cut the funding for my apprenticeship and I was left jobless unless I wanted to work for nothing. Essentially I now work at argos which I feel is a little beneath me seeing as I have over 20 qualifications but at the end of the day its money in my back pocket and a way to tie the ends together. I know it's not a dream job or anything, but it pays my bills and leaves me with expendable cash. I also have the opportunity to do team leader and managerial training to gain a nationally recognised qualification so I can work as a manager anywhere. What you've got to think of is its not what you're doing now but what you're doing in the future. You don't know what doors McDonalds could open for you. I know for a fact mcdonalds do the same sort of course that argos does because I have a friend who started in the local restaurant and is now working at HQ, so just think mcdonalds may be the bottom rung of the ladder, but the only way you can go from there is up.

i'm gonna keep mine nice and simple. i don't work in mcdonalds and i don't want to work in mcdonalds. :)

I currently work in McDonalds alongside college and I am not embarrassed because those who would say something are more likely to be the ones who don't have experience in receiving a wage slip every month (or two weeks in McDonalds ;)) So think more of the money and less of the embarrassed.

I have two friends who work in McDonalds and two who work in KFC.

Wouldn't say its the people who don't have experience in working, its more the fear of the unknown, working infront of everyone really.

I wouldn't want to work in McDonalds ever, I'd rather work at primark tbh. I don't laugh at people who do though. Money is money
