Grinding in my kneecap after dislocation?

Hey haven't been on in a while, been searching the internet but can't find much so wondering if anyone could be of any help? Basically I was playing dance central on kinect on xbox last friday and I heard a very loud click I fell to the ground and my kneecap was on the side of my leg I was in so much pain and my nana rang an ambulance. I was given gas & air and went through 4 and a half cans of it in total. Made me relaxed and very sleepy but didnt do a lot for the pain really. Had lots of x rays and a doctor came and cracked my knee cap back in to place. I then had another set of xrays and got sent home with my knee bandaged up and crutches.

Few days later my nana had to drive me 40 miles back for me to see a consultant who x rayed me again and said if it happens a 2nd time they will do an op, take out my knee cap cut the ligaments shorter then put my kneecap back in and stitch me up. I didn't really get much info but they said last friday they'd book me in for physio this week and I still haven't heard anything. Don't know if I should chase them up on that seeing as they said I might be on crutches for 6 months. I been trying to walk on it and everything to prevent muscle wastage but I'm so paranoid that the slightest thing will dislocate it again because it's honestly the worst pain I ever felt in my life. Today I've started feeling grinding/vibrating and popping in my knee cap. So basically should I be worried about this, does it sound normal? I can't go back and see consultant, I think I'm supposed to ask physio this but they haven't contacted me or anything :(

last friday and you're starting to walk? far too early. i was strapped up and couldnt bend my leg for 4 weeks the first time i popped my knee cap, then came physio.

they kept you on gas and air, done the x rays and THEN put it back in? .. being out for so long would have done more damage than the injury itself. the paramedics put mines in, both times.

I don't get grinding but I can hear the cartilage when im standing up, its a funny sound to describe but its not grinding.

Ooh :/ Basically the paramedics said they could give me an injection for pain too but it would make me throw up and they couldnt give me an injection to stop sickness cos Im too young at 16 but they said legally they're not allowed to pop it back in place. I had my leg in a soft splint and it definitely straightened it and moved it more than it was but not fully. Yeah someone else said if they leave it too long the knee gets too used to being out of place for so long. After I saw the consultant he never wrapped my leg back up or anything and said he wouldn't put a brace on as it would reduce my mobility. I've just been trying to put weight on it by walking with my crutches. The grinding/vibrating feels quite sickening but I'm wondering if I've maybe damaged the cartilage

Someone I know from my school has done the same thing as you (well, sounds similar.) He has been on crutches since late october last year because he didn't get the physio.
If I was in your position I'd try and bend it slightly every day, or else it might stiffen up and be sooo hard to bend it from then on.

My brother has a exersice sheet from physio he went to a while back when his knee popped out - I could try and find it and post it on here so you could get an idea of what they'll do in physio before you actually go? Could help.

I have a bit of a funny walk, and I end up falling over quite a bit and landing on my knees. One day I had a really bad fall and then my mum noticed when she touched my knee it made a grinding, vibrating feeling my guess it is the same thing that you say you get.

My doctor said it's called knee crepitus and you get it with arthritis. For me it is normal to get it when I bang my knee and it's only really a problem if it hurts when you move your knee, but I get no pain at all and since my orthopaedic surgeon didn't really seem concerned with it, I'm not either.

Do mention it to your physio though if they ever contact you :)

I tore my knee ligament a while ago and it feels like its grinding sometimes, but the big giveaway is when I walk sometimes it just bails from under me and it goes, usually I can correct myself and not fall to the floor embarrassingly. Unfortunately there is little they can do other than keyhole surgery, and the NHS isn't keen on giving people surgery at the moment. It's a horrible thing to live with.

Go ask your doctor for a MRI on your knee to see if theres any damage to tendons etc.

But definitely chase it up. With the NHS is how it is you need to remember, those who shout the loudest are the ones who are going to get sorted quicker. Really kick up a fuss with them, they will do anything to pro-long it.
