So, how long till the 'magic 46' is reached? A recent YouGov poll for the Sun put the Tories on 29%, 13 points behind Labour. But the Tory rebel also added a disclaimer: "We are talking about MPs here. Labour MPs walked wide-eyed into defeat with Gordon Brown."
Under the Conservative Party's leadership rules, devised by former leader (and current foreign secretary) William Hague, if Cameron were to win the support of a simple majority of MPs in a no confidence vote, he would remain party leader and no further vote could be called for another 12 months. But if the PM were to lose, he would have to resign as Tory leader and would be barred from standing in a future leadership election.
In recent weeks, various Conservative cabinet ministers - including home secretary Theresa May, defence secretary Philip Hammond and education secretary Michael Gove - have been accused of being 'on manoeuvres' and positioning themselves ahead of a leadership contest. Last week, Cameron's former director of communications, Andy Coulson, used an article in GQ magazine to accuse Boris Johnson of wanting the prime minister to "fail miserably" at the next election and then take his job - a charge that the mayor of London has strenuously denied.
Only Brady knows the number of letters he has received. And not everyone agrees that the Conservative leader needs to start prepping for a no confidence vote. Another MP, who is also believed to have penned an anti-Cameron letter to Brady, told HuffPost UK that the number had not yet crossed 30. "I don't think the number is that high," he said. "I really don't."
The magic number of 46 letters has not yet been reached, but it's surely in the mid-20s to over 30 now. If Cameron is to be challenged, then i'd say the most likely time would be after the European Elections and Local Elections in 2014 - elections where UKIP will likely top the polls giving ammo to the backbenchers and Labour will probably come in second with the Tories in third.
That being said I think if one is called then that he will hang on and lead his party to crushing defeat in 2015 after which the Unconservative Party will implode in on itself as it comes to terms with the fact that it has not won a parliamentary majority since 1992 and looks increasingly likely to ever do so again. Even if he is replaced with another non-entity they are pissing in the wind as far as i'm concerned.
Thoughts? any Conservatives here who want Cameron to go or back him?
