As always, life goes on just as before. It's just another of those quaint little English rituals ... maidens cycling to the pub on Sundays to watch the cricket … timeless and meaningless, like making promises on EU referendums, or writing posts about STOR.
I haven't posted the main story from a few days ago as you've all probably heard it - that the ECHR has ruled that life sentences for murderers are inhuman and degrading and are effectively moving to abolish them. Now of course I could do a post on why this is wrong, a disgrace etc but anyone who isn't detatched from reality already can see what a disgrace this ruling from the foreign ECHR is and it doesn't need me to explain it or air those views.
But Richard North here has done a nice little piece pointing out how, yet again (particularly the Conservative Party), howls with rage but does.... absolutely nothing. Why does it do absolutely nothing? i'll tell you why. Because a) it really agrees with the ECHR but is too afraid to say so in fear of alienating the supporters who cling to it & b) in order to remain a member of the EU - which the Tory Party adores but pretends it doesn't - you have to remain a member of the ECHR.
Our membership of the ECHR (along with the EU naturally) is illegal under our own constitution, that no foreign court may exercise its power over this realm - it's very clear in the Bill of Rights. Let's restore ultimate authority over law to our Supreme Court like every other proud nation in the world and leave both the ECHR and the EU.
