Dutch student Mahamed Abdullahi, the vice president for welfare and community at King’s College London, called for it to be immediately axed from official services because it was “outdated” and “just a bit s---”.
But fellow students fought back, launching a petition against the elected student officer and calling on Mr Abdullahi to “respect the traditions of the university and the country in which we study”.
In a post on social media, Mr Abdullahi wrote: “Hey guys, I want to get rid of the national anthem at graduation because it’s outdated and not reflective of the ‘global’ values that the college espouses.
“In the context of increasing far Right nationalism across Europe and the legacy of the British empire, it’s just a bit s--- and it doesn’t even bang. Basically, f--- the nation state.”
He then called for students to email him if they agreed, so he could “have student voices at the table”.
James Findon, a 26-year-old student studying for a PhD in neuroscience, created an online petition in response to Mr Abdullahi’s post.
“We, the undersigned, believe that the National Anthem should stay as an important tradition at our graduation ceremonies,” read the petition, which was quickly backed by hundreds of signatures on Sunday afternoon.
“We invite Mr Abdullahi to consider the views of all students on this matter and to respect the traditions of the university and the country in which we study.”
The debate escalated as the university confirmed it was “currently in discussion” with student officers about the use of the national anthem at graduation ceremonies, but a spokesman later confirmed that it had “no plans to remove the national anthem from graduation ceremonies”.
