yeah, you get trained and stuff. thats the purpose of mentors. you'll have someone to guide you through it. you're expected to read up on basic stuff for your part 1 OBS>STU exam (its a theory test, /20, you need 17 or more to pass). then after you've passed your theory, you'll be assigned with a mentor (or a few, it varies) and they'll go online with you as you start off on a ground position. then you'll have a practical exam on a certain position (usually tower) and you'll be assessed on your ability. if the examiners and rtsm think you're good enough, you'll be validated and become an S1 :)
