My mum ate it
I was looking over it in the morning and when i got on the bus or i walked or i got the car my bag was open slightly and it fell out on the road and i didn't notice and then as car rolled over it
My cat used it for lavitoral purpos (that one's actaly happened to me IRL)
This always works for me; plead that you really HAVE done it this time, and you know you havnt done every homework before, but this time you spent ages on it... but just forgot and youll have it in first thing next morning ;)

What I'd say:
"I got on the train in the morning and I opened my bag and took all my stuff out. I scanned through my homework and then realised it was my bag and shoved everything in. Then I got to school and realised I left my homework on the train along with a few other sheets of paper"
Note: Train could be bus, but not car/taxi, because they stop at one destination.
