Try like a little text thing saying 'NEW POST' like flashing from red to yellow like on runescape.

and if no post has been made keep it just like, green.

or you could have a sound, that goes NEW POST if you click on it? i dunno thatd be cool :D

i got it(with phat idea)
Hot (new posts) - red phat
Hot(no new posts) - purple phat
New Posts-Yellow Phat
No new posts-White phat

you could use the rs scroll type thing (clue scroll) and put a bright N (light effect) if theres a new post and an N with no light effects if there isnt :).
