I think it was mostly conspiracy created by his record company, trying to get people intrested in his music. I think he's dead seeing as enough people wanted him dead... And also whats the point of killing the only witness to his shooting if he was faking it...

He could be alive, and ran away pretending to be dead as he did not want to be famous anymore, but I do think he is dead.
