If you're family is really poor and in poverty then I guess that makes it more acceptable, but usually it's chavs that think they're cool.

SO why would it be a problem telling your parents that you stole stuff if they already know?

Aside from jumping to conclusions and making those unorthodox accusations of why you stole it, I'd say they'll only talk to you and give you a warning, I assume you're what, around 13/15 years old? If it's the first or one of the first times you've done this, they're only going give you a warning. Having an ASBO is a little extreme, I assume you only stole something from a store? Or did you attack a little old lady, take her shopping and her purse?
