I use the Canon 400D D-SLR, however if you are looking to get into photography, getting an SLR straight away is NOT the best idea. I reccomend getting a Fujifilm S5700 as a starter camera, that is what I used, and I am now learning my D-SLR.

Panasonic TZ-5 trather than a D-SLR for a beginner. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145326
Pound coins are gold... ;P
If you want to get into photography and not 'snapping', then you do not want a total compact.. you do want something like a Fujifilm Finepix. A compact camera is for a snapper ;)
Please stop with this snapper crap, "snapping" doesn't exist, it's just some made up term used by photographers trying to make their work look better than it really is  When I go to a photography gallery, I look at photos, not snaps...
I suggest going straight in with an SLR, if you want to go into photography where you are in control with your focus and angles, which you won't with these compact/auto-focus cameras. There's no reason not to, and you'll learn all you need to learn with an SLR straight away. You won't learn how to use an SLR without an SLR, which is what Darren seems to be suggesting...
£300-500 will get you a Canon 400D with 2 lenses and a few other things, but like I said before, I do NOT reccomend it for starting out.
