I've grown up with cats, in my life I've had 6.

They're really nice, all of them obviously have their own personality. They're quite frustrating when they're little. Our cats pooped everywhere until we trained them to hold their bums.

And our last cat wouldn't eat so we had to give him warm weetabix :S Doctor told us to do it. He was 1 when he first ate catfood. loll.

having a cat from when it is little (kitten) is an awesome experience imo

You should really get a dog if you want your mother to bond with and cuddle, but hey if a cats your idea, good luck with it xo
