I ran it on my UMPC, 800MHz CPU, 1GB RAM and it ran just fine :P
And linux is a bugger if you've never used it before, unless you want to spend months learning how to do things that come naturally on windows I wouldn't even consider it :P

I would question calling it a downgrade if your heading to linux, linux is an upgrade. XP on the other hand is far inferior to vista so definatly a downgrade - why not just wait till win7?
I'm putting Windows 7 on my PC in a sec, the beta version. I've just made a 20gb partition.
Absolutely useless window managers (still haven't managed to fix vsync on ati card), horrible font rendering, having to build your own software, useless driver support on pretty much everything. I would call it a downgrade.
Beta or RC1 from the msft site, cause they are doing an official RC last few days to download.
