Anime, Pirating & the Economy!

lol we have MANGA so no we don't.

US has blu ray and the special edition of the girl who leapt through time. we only have the dvd.

US get alot more series than we do. the only thing i thought was better was that we were getting more dvds releasing with 12-13 eps. but the us do that now aswell. or even better just sell them in seasons.

We don't even have dragonball dvds which to most would be the most popular anime ( or most over rated ) ever. yet we dont even have any dvds out here. Only reason we don't have DB/Z or OP here is because MANGA are to cheap to pay for it. "because we might not make a return" course they would >.>

So yes. US is just better and in general the quality of the dvds are better. Relevations i like tho. FMA sets i got where good

I've explained time and time again how Manga aren't actually that bad, but you're having none of it, are you? :P It's your personal preference though. No one else views Manga Entertainment as a bad aspect of the anime industry. They distributed a ton of great series and movies over here which I'm sure 99.9% of anime fans are happy about.

We have a special edition of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but it's a HMV exclusive so Amazon don't list it. Here it is. I don't care for BluRay and quite frankly it's overpriced, so I don't mind the fact we don't have any BluRay anime over here.

Of course they do, it's a bigger country an the anime market over here is very small in comparison, but I'm not on about the amount of series we have, I'm on about the DVDs.

Blame Funimation for that. They could easily release Dragon Ball Z and One Piece over here but they don't. I don't blame Manga to be honest. They already have Death Note, Bleach and Naruto. Three of the most popular shounens ever that probably cost a bomb to license and distribute to such a small market.

I disagree, once again. We have better quality DVDs. As I've stated before, I believe distributors to the UK actually try hard to make their DVDs good because of the very small market. They need to appeal to people. Whereas in the US the anime market is huge, and distributors don't need to convince fans to buy the DVDs. Hence why they released Gurren Lagann with only Japanese audio and english subtitles, and absolutely no extras. Over here they feel the need to give us huge boxsets packed with extras and memorabilia.

This is never going to end though because you obviously greatly prefer the US, and I obviously greatly prefer the UK. Personal preference, that's all it comes down to.

Dont make up fake statistics ;) lol but yes im sure the majority of people are but im sure theres a handful of people that agree with me.
- Ive had naruto dvds freeze, subbing the dub.
- Bleach they made a few typos on cases and didnt lable them correctly [ Minor but meh ]
- Death Note when ever there was a moment when it was silent there was a crackling sound which was very off putting.
- Girl.. time not subbing certain parts. and they do it for other series aswell. when theres a few peolpe talking at once they sometimes don't sub them just one of them.

Just a few reasons. may be minor reasons but still distrupt my veiwing of them.

Meh, other series tho so that was a bad example. And u agree blu rays are to expensive but for some movies having the blu ray would make it look more stunning.

No. Funimation went through the trouble of getting it, Dubbing it, Subbing it. So they can put a price tag of what they feel all the work is worth. MANGA stated that they didnt buy it because of prices. But they would have made a ton with selling the entire dragonball series. they lost there chance now tho because everyone just got the seasons sets from the US.

Manga for being to cheap. DB is bigger than those 3 so the money would be worth it with the amount of stuff they would be able to put out. All 3 of them have crap dubs so mayb the got a discount who knows. lol.

Actually they do have to try. Hence why they have all these cons. think the con season is finishing or finished. The companys in america have to dub it and sub it. all companys do over here is buy it and slap on there logo. but production faults lie with them like the crackling noise on death note.

Indeed it does. id eb a very happy person if funi distrubuted here or revelations did it all for them. black cat was done by someone else.. *looks* Mvm meh.

And in my opinion Manga aren't so bad and I stabd buy it. Soem of my DVDs have minor mistakes. But they're MINOR. They're only human.

- They do not sub the dub for Naruto and that is a fact. They used to do that for their olds series such as Ghost in the Shell years ago. They do not do it anymore since they received overwhelming complaints from fans. Also, prove their is a fault in the disc. It could be your DVD player.
- They're only human. Every company makes mistakes. EVER company.
- Doesn't happen with my DVD.
- That's probably a fault in production. They wouldn't leave out parts, they translate the entire script. They can't check every single disc though, so if there is a small problem in production it's going to be on every disc until they redo it. That isn't the staffs fault, blame the machines!

There are no 'other series'. If theres a special edition available, they're going to release it. 98% of anime would be pointless in BluRay. Only certain movies would benefit from it but as I said before, it's overpriced and I'm happy with the quality of normal DVDs.

It's not like BluRay is that popular yet anyway. Maybe once BluRay replaces DVDs, then they should start selling BluRay anime over here but now in this day and age they're only going to lose profit.

Your logic doesn't make any sense. Their DVDs wouldn't be any better just because more people are already willing to buy them, it would be the opposite. People are already willing to buy the DVDs so whats the point in adding fancy extras and releasing special edition sets.

I'm assume you're oblivious to the fact that Manga Entertainment also license, dub and sub series just as Funimation do. So by your logic they are also allowed to put a price tag of what they feel all the work is worth. Wheres your proof they would have made a profit? You're making up fake statistics. It's a long series that would require a lot of work. Basically it's more than they can handle and they should be worried about money problems. We're in a recession. They're not going to take any risks.

Death Note has an alright dub and the voice cast are both popular and famous. I doubt any discounts were given.

We have conventions as well, you know. Although I have absolutely no idea what that has to do with companies actually trying to make their DVDs good. Just because America have more conventions than the UK doesn't change the fact that they don't put the same amount of effort into their DVDs than the UK does. Covnentions are just a means of fast and easy distribution. Millions of fans are going to be there so they don't need to produce special sets or anything, people will buy it anyway.

A lot of companies that sell anime over here also sell anime in the US. Subbing and dubbing is irrelevant. It's the same company. Comapanies that do buy American licensed series for distribution over here pay more because work has already been done on the DVD. UK companies get the same deal every other company in the world gets. Why do you assume the UK have it easy?

They re-released it with a dub, but at first they churned it out as fast as possible with only the sub for a quick buck.

MVM are good. They distributed Paranoia Agent. Flawless subs, good extras. I have no complaints.

They did for the early dvds and now the sub is just changed slightly, As i said bleach was minor, well on various tvs and dvd players it does. ill find an example later on for you. Well they need better machiens then don't they :)

Thats what i said certain movies. not movies like akira etc with the "remastered". Newer films do look 10x better but the price is the problem.

Nah quite alot of people i know buy blu ray anime. its only newer series or short series that get released in blu ray tho. im intrested to see if funi release OP in blu ray when they read the HD episodes.

And what did they do all that for then? and yes if they do dub and sub it them selfs they should eb able to sell it but no one would buy because they buy from japan if they plan to dub it in there native language, I don't know how english speaking dubs work out tho. Since all the dubs are normaly from US.

Funi said it was to expensive before they did the season sets. Now they have them. Spain has been relasing them, France and germany are starting or have started. Im sure MANGA have enough to buy them. Could have easily made there money back with the amount they would have gotten with it

CBA typing anymore. I dont know fo any UK dubs only american dubs. and when i see dvds there always dubs from america so all they have to do is encode it blah blah and put it on a dvd. and sell. where as people beforehand had to make the dub.

Because all the series ive seen from most of these groups are done in america. thats why. Do you know of any UK dubs?

I've said that some of the dub for Death Note is horrible notably L's voice, but overall it's a decent effort. Light's VA is good. Also, if Funimation said it was expensive to release Dragon Ball Z well there you go... you just answered your own question. Manga don't have as much money as Funimation, they can't afford it.

A lot of older series have UK dubs when companies did everything on their own. These days though UK companies pay more to use the American dub when they release the series over here. As I said before though, most companies that distribute anime in the UK are actually America companies. Take Beez for example. They're a subsidiary of Bandai. Bandai release the series in the US, and they then release it in the UK via Beez. Believe it or not, but the same goes for Manga Entertainment as well. They are a subsidiary of Starz Media, which is an American distribution company. If they want to release an anime they already own (in the US) in the UK, they won't have to pay any extra because their company has already produced the dub, not another company. Pretty much all UK anime distribution companies are subsidiaries of larger American companies, that way they save money.

As for my opinion on proper English dubs done by English people - it's the way forward! I've only seen one English dub which was for an old series called Urusei Yatsura, but honestly it was very good. But unfortunately unless a UK-only anime distributor with money to waste comes into the picture, English anime dubs will never exist in this day and age. Although I seem to remember reading somewhere how D.Gray-Man had a few British voice actors doing the dub. Whether it's authentic or actually faked by an American I don't know.

No i meant the dragon boxes. Funi already have dbz etc. Dragon boxes were remastered frame by frame none of this kai crap. thats why it was so expensive but lots of people have payed for it.

Sure its fake i have the DGM dvd so meh didnt sound to English. <- i say english because scottish people have a diffrent accent as i found out in london ^^; The girls love my scottish accent :P
