The Unions have always been for themselves and not their members or the country. In the 1970s' and in the 1980s' (although they failed during that decade) they controlled the government which was littered with socialists in its ranks, the Union leaders often had meetings with James Callaghan (the then Labour Prime Minister) and basically told him what to do, hence why that government was eventually thrown out with a vote of no confidence.Quote:

So they are easily replaceable.
