If you're living on residence over here anyway you likely wont even need to have a car. I know atleast where the Universities are where I live, there are atleast ten assorted stores tailored to satisfy the needs of nearby students. Very convenient.
i had to pay $1200 just to park my car on campus. i gave up my residence room and they said i couldn't switch parking. FML.
As much as you'll love the freedom of driving, I'd honestly wait for a year. It's quite a lot cheaper over there and you can't use a UK driving licence in the USA, although I believe you *may* be able to use it temporarily while you sort out your own licence.
You will get one and then only have it for a year, so it would be wasteful in my opinion :)
you'll also have the whole ordeal of selling the car before you move, cancelling insurance etc.
