1st: The Iraq war. It changed the entire perception of the USA, and our own government and still haunts various politicians today.
2nd: 9/11. Safe to say Air Travel has definately been changed all over the world (assuming you are patient enough to get onto the damn plane :P)
3rd: The rise of the internet as mainstream and a community, with the ability to swing votes an have quite a lot of influence.
