If you shop around, I'm sure you'd be able to find a reasonable quote for a Golf as I have 3 friends with them - one had the 2.0 GTI (115bhp) and paid only £2k a year insurance, one friend has the 1.4 model (75bhp) and another has the 1.8 SDI diesel.
