I use a cheap laser mouse (£3 off the car boot), PC Line, and it works fine with my HTPC. For the record, I use it on a smoked glass top, on top of a black Ikea cabinet. It can wander when not being touched occasionally, but other than that it's OK.
It works fine on top of a DVD case...
Managed to overcome the problem a little by turning the dpi right down to 400 and compensating for loss of sensitivity with the windows settings. It does however still move slightly by itself once in a while so my pc would probably never go to screensaver.
Wonder why they even went on to using laser mice, optical was fine.
My laser mouse is fine. Laser mice are bettrer than optical if you get a good one dur.

I use Razer Deathadder at 3500 dpi and it doesnt shoot across the screen for me
although I can change the windows pointer and acceleration on mine

How heavy is the mouse? If it's super light, then it could cause it to move slightly I guess?
