Difference between your case and Pigperson's is yours is considered as accidental damage, and his is a mechanical fault (unless he of course ain't saying the full story and he dropped it haha).
I mean, it's a 1st gen so what, 2010? It's after a year however the Sales of Goods Act doesn't give a time limit as to when a warranty ends (well actually it's now six months with European regs).
However, iPads are expensive, perceived as 'high quality', and should last a couple of years without something breaking.
What I think you should do, like others have said, is go to your retailer (or Apple I guess) and ask for a repair. Oh and get reading this:

Another thing is, I've noticed in the Westfield shopping centres here there are quite a few mobile phone/tablet repair businesses, so if you have a repair shop nearby you could try them :)
