METAR decoding.
Because I'm so nice and very bored I decided to write a little list of METAR language - Explaining what certain "codes" mean.
You will see these codes when you recieve weather information for your departure/destination airport either by getting it yourself or given to you by ATC.
DZ = Drizzle
RA = Rain
SN = Snow
GR = Hail
SQ = Squalls
GS = Small Hail
GS = Small Grains
IC = Diamond Dust
PE = Ice Pellets
BR = Mist
DU = Widespread Dust
VA = Volcanic Ash
SA = Sand
SS = Sandstorm
DS = Duelstorm
FC = Funnel Cloud (Very dangerous, start of a tornado)
Further information for above:
MI = Shallow
BC = Patches
DR = Drifting
BL = Blowing
SH = Showers
TS = Thunderstorm
FZ = Supercooled (Freezing)
Simple:
RA = Rain
SHRA = Rain Showers
FZFG = Freezing Fog
-DZ = Slight Drizzle
+SHSN = Heavy Snow Showers
CB = Cumulonimbus
TCU = Towering CB.
Example of Manchester (EGCC) current METAR (Meteorlogical Aerodrome Report)
EGCC 150150Z VRB03KT 9999 FEW030 07/06 Q1025 NOSIG
De-coded into voice; "Manchester Airport information X - Time recorded 0150z (0250 local) surface winds variable at 03 knots, visability 10km or more, few cloud (1-2 oktas) at 3000ft, outside air temperature plus 7 degrees, dew point plus 6 degrees, no significant change."
