We all vote for our MEPs in the EU - it's a democracy (The USSR wasn't, and it was communist) Also, each state has a period of presidency. The UK's wasn't too long ago (though i believe everyone in the EU should vote for a single person to become president). And we won't loose our identity, we speak English. The Americans already think of us as 'Europe' and they don't even know the difference between Britain, the UK and England.Noone really cares about us as a nation.
And yes we do benefit, it allows us to purchase goods from Europe without import duty, it allows us to go on holiday and travel without needing visas, we can work freely within the EU (which eastern europeans can't YET). The East Europeans will stop coming soon, when their economy becomes on par with other EU countries - which is happening gradually.
Most countries have different parts which are richer than other. Wales for example has a worse economy than some states in the EU and the south of Italy is much poorer than the north. The EU has the largest economy in the world. Though atm i think it's the wrong time to revert to the euro. Our pound is particularly strong at the moment.
