Excessive use of 'lol'

when im actually laughing or laughing a lot i say LOL or lirl/LIRL

lol is a way to start-up a dead conversation, i have had conversations that go like

LOL
LOL
LOL
LOL
LOL

where we say lol over and over again to eachother

In Italy, they wouldn't say LOL so you'd be hard done by to find anyone who says that - true?
