The new "Maxtor" drives are very reliable. The old ones before they got bought by Seagate are the ones to watch out for.

Well Dell try to be as cheap as possible, and Western Digitals are generally cheap so that is why. WD don't have the bast record in reliability to be fair though.

Wouldn't surprise me if the drive in the HP was Hitachi or Samsung.

I recently bought a 500gb Maxtor Basic External HDD.
It's brilliant.

I like the HP, it's working good so far.

Should I unplug it when it's not in use?

Nah, shouldn't be necessary. Most external HDDs will power down the driv after a while of not being accessed and then power it on again when you need it anyway.
