They're all completely different in the setting, the world, the technology, characters, etc, but they all follow the same basic story: saving the world from something. Apart from that, they're not really similar at all.

I think 7 was the best but then again I havent really played X, XI and XII.
X in my opinion is up there with the greats of the Final Fantasy series. It has such great and likeable characters such as Wakka ;)
The only character I can truly say I didn't like was Kimhari.
Nobuo Uematsu outdid himself with the OST again, this is my favourite track of X.
It will give you a feel of the tropical side of the game - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McjTN-i2R2Y
Trail looks immense
I preferred VII, then VIII then IX. I'm sure I have X and X-2 chucking around, but don't remember them anything like the former's.
Definitly preferred VII, or thats the way I remember it now. Not being so old when I played VII and VIII means I'm not quite sure. Quite liked the chocobo breading and what not on VII, and the cards on VIII.
Kinda O/T but an FF point, my uncle heard on VII if you maxxed your account, max xp max money Aeris would revive. He actually got a fair chunk of the way to trying that, even though its most probably not going to happen.
And a nice VIII glitch (I've never tried), instead of killing a single monster turn them into cards. The monsters level with you, with your advantage being in AP (Action Points), so theoretically you could finish the game at level 1.
Just seen the trailer for it, looks great.
