In some aspects, I wouldn't say that the writers were making it up as they go along.

I like the way its all come together actually. I was a bit sceptical about the man in black being Jacob's foil especially since Jacob has featured quite heavily throughout whereas he was a seemingly new character.
However when they revealed him as the black smoke, so much stuff made sense - manifestations etc etc. Also it gave him a decent history throughout the show to rival Jacob's.
Episode 4 - sweet.
nice couple of explanations in there!
The rules of the two timelines no longer make sense to me. I honestly don't know how Ben can also be a teacher. The second timeline also feels more like fanservice than a legitimate storyline. Everything on the Island is awesome though.
I wonder why Kate isnt on the list.
There's a theory that only people he had physical contact with can be candidates. In the episode they focus on Jacob physically touching each one of them (rewatch one of the last scenes) and in S5's finale he doesn't touch Kate. He also doesn't touch Jin.
Great episode
Shame about the Claire thing not being revealed yet but I spose this is how LOST works. Did this in season 1 where they leave you on a cliff hanger and return to a different story. :)
I'll have to rewatch S5 finale.
