my computer had a virus ages ago which wiped the hard drive, ever since it wouldn't let me apply a background...weird.

Are you sure that's the issue? Windows doesn't let you have a nice background if it hasn't been activated for a certain amount of days.

See if the following works:

1) Goto Start
2) Type 'CMD'
3) Right click on 'cmd.exe' and select 'Run as administrator'
4) Type the following into the window that shows up: slmgr /rearm
5) Restart your computer.

Activate Windows as soon as you can though.
