Might this be of any help?
They're called "Ethernet Plugs" usually. You have an ethernet cable connecting the modem and the "adapter". You then buy other ethernet plugs to receive the internet.
The technologies quite expensive though bare in mind and you need to look into speeds, if you buy cheapish one's they probably aren't up for gaming or speedy downloads.
Buying a wireless router is cheaper, easier and more reliable however.
@Beanegg: The link is out of date (2006)! I was thinking of people helping me to choose newer solutions and hardware.I know I will need;I need you to recommend me on how to properly do this and what hardware you recommend me use.
- The main wall socket to plug ethernet into router
- 2X: Wall sockets to go upstairs into my PC and Xbox360.
Just get some HomePlugs. Sorted.
There were links on the second page. ;)
These are the links:

Look at this Amazon bundle, I know they are not a well known make but I'm sure I can't go wrong for the price and the specifications of the hardware:
I've got the Ethernet cables already, so don't worry about them.
Edit: Thanks above people, can't reputate you at the moment :(
Just remember, you get what you pay for, and these things can work really badly, depending on your house wiring.
I'm sure they offer some money back warranty /guarantee. Just to say, I am wanting to do this as our home network (what of it there is) needs an upgrade to fit with the digital age. I am building a media PC for our downstairs living room and we will be streaming content from different PC to PC.
Here is my plan:
- Wireless from router: Roaming laptop
- Ethernet from router: Downstairs family PC1
- Mains system: Downstairs media PC2
- Mains system: Upstairs power PC3
- Mains system: Upstairs X360
We will be streaming movies and images to and from Computers, so I'm sure 80MB/s should be fine.
To be honest, Wireless N (using WPA2) would be better than HomePlugs if you aren't going wired.. just my 2c though.
