Don't mean to be creating gruesome threads with younger members about but this question came to mind after the other day.
We were walking to Asda to get stuff for our BBQ for the England v USA game and this cat ran out from a drive-way sized gap in the wall straight into the road and went underneath a passing car. It ran back out and seemed OK at first but died a few moments later.
More graphic detail in spoiler
I don't think it went under the wheels - it got into the road just in front of the car and went under the front bumper inbetween the wheels and got hit by the stuff on the underside of the car, then ran out from the side of the car back through the wall it came from. But then it was running weirdly so you could tell it was badly hurt and then it just ran to a corner and lay down in a sort of fit before dying a few seconds later. It obviously had bad internal injuries because it was bleeding from the mouth and didn't make any sounds throughout the whole thing other than gasps for air as if it had been winded.
Was terribly sad though. The moment it started running towards the road, I could hear a car coming from behind me and I knew exactly what was going to happen but I sort of froze and it was all over in literally a second and we were all just standing there in shock. Also the driver slowed down once he realised he'd ran over something but didn't stop - to be fair it is likely he never saw the cat at all, but still I reckon it was obvious from the way we all stopped still and I had my hands on my head in shock lol.
Only other time I've seen an animal hit by a vehicle was a little dog which ran into a road but the car was going quite slowly and it just got hit by the bumper and the car stopped. The dog just rolled over and was fine and ran back down the road it came from :P
Anyone else had any similar experiences?

When we first got our dog, still a puppy - my mum was at the other side of the road when I opened the door. The gate was still open and she shot out the house and accross the road. At the same time, a 4 wheel drive was driving down the street. We all screamed obviously and once the car had gone, she was just there.. curled up in a little ball. Luckily she was fine, just a little shook up. I mean, it's not the same as seeing an animal die from it, but I'm pretty sure the first part is the same. Feeling helpless as a car driving over her.

Yeah the helplessness, exactly. Did it touch her or just go over and frighten her?

Yeah, the feeling was awful. I was only young and can still remember it.
Lucky she was so small and the car was so big, so it didn't touch her thank god. Even though it frightened her, she still loved the car! :D

Worst i've seen is a hedgehog being ran over, not very pleasent. :(
I've hit a rabbit by accident once. It got hit by something underneath rather than the front bumper. When I checked the underneath of the car, the back bumper has a solid metal plate so it's amazing the bit that clearly hit the rabbit didn't slice it up :S Not very pleasant. Must be horrible seeing a cat get hit :(

Yeah that's what happened to the cat - not the bumper or the wheels but something underneath.
