Hmm yer spill it i also need to no this :D
If someone sign's up and put's you down as a refferal this will be added to your profile. The idea is to get your friend's and so on to sign up and in doing so they put you as the refferer. We can check though if you're just signing up clones so watch out. <.<
Ok, but what are they used for ? I mean, ok I have 8 refferals. Hurray ! That's it ?

I believe it increases your reputation point's, the more refferal's you get.
