Sony: PS3 Released In November 2006

At Tokyo's 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that they are delaying the release of their long-awaited PlayStation 3 console till November due to technical difficulties.

Despite not providing a more detailed release date, the company have said they will ship one million units per month after the launch and plan to have produced six million PS3s before the end of 2006. Not only will the unit be completely backwards compatible, but will rely on a 60GB Linux-based hard drive unit which will be included in the box.

Sony also let slip their plans for the online element of their new console, which will be free to play via the "basic" package and include community tools such as a lobby matching, voice chat and commerce features incorporating software bootable directly from the PS3's hard drive.

Games will come in the form of Blu-ray in the hope to minimise piracy, though the machine will of course play movie DVDs and PS2 DVDs. SCE also said that developers will get their hands on the console's software development kit (SDK) in June.

The news marks the first time Sony plan a global release for their PlayStation hardware.

Only 6 million by end of 2006?

Christmas would be their best selling time, they need more than 6 million shipped.

I got my Xbox 360 and I don't plan on getting a PS3 so i'm OK =]

I'm not gonna get a PS3 after just getting a PSP x] Sounds cool though.

6 million is a hell of a lot of consoles guys :P Especially for a November release.

It makes me laugh though how Sony seem to have simply nicked all the things the 360 has done and/or tried to improve them and claim them as their own: the simultaneous worldwide launch in November; the integrated online system; the HDD. 60GB sounds great but I'm guessing it will be huge - and Sony haven't even confirmed if it will come with the console; it will probably be something you're forced to buy separately to make the console look cheaper.

To be honest, Sony really are idea theifs. I think the court case that ruled against them proved it this week - they've had to pay out millions after it being proved that they stole the technology for the Dualshock controller.

I still would prefer a XBOX 360 to a PS3 as im a microsoft lad myself

i have xbox360 hardly paly it liek the rest fo am stuff ill get a ps3 n probz wont play that either

I'll probably end up getting a PS3 in 2007 whenever they drop price a little.

I probley get it for my Birthday in Feb 07 :P
