indie means independent - Not mainstream.
Therefore you could class any unsigned band as indie..
In popular music, indie music (from independent) is any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by perceived independence from commercial pop music and mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach.
Genres associated with indie
lol I think some people find it subjective, but Scissor Sisters aren't indie they're just like a disco pop band.
I don't agree that SS are indie.
There annoying, i'll say that but they ain't indie. (:
hard fi.
indie isn't meant to be a genre. indie is assigned to a band which is assigned to an independent record label, for example bloc party. bands often mistaken for being indie include coldplay and the fratellis.
indie nowadays though is normally a band (usually in the NME) who have a basic line-up of vocals, bass, guitar and drums and play simple 3-4 minute songs with short guitar solos. not too heavy to be classed as real rock music, but too 'heavy' to be classed as general pop music.
arctic monkeys are an indie band, aren't they?
this new 'indie' genre is actually *Removed*

yeah like jord said, there are two kinda types of indie, the propper one is the propper music definition for it, it all came around the brit-pop era (I did a presentation in Music last week on this, rofl) and then there is a nother say, definition arising for the 'indie' culture upcoming, so to speak.
but to vicky, the thread starter, i'd say bands like bloc party & klaxons are indie, how you're on about it.
that probably didn't make any sense but i know what i ment (:
i knew i was right!!
thanks everyone for like, clearing up the independent bit, although it kinda confused me, so it's just individual record labels right?!
and yeah ben, you made sense except for "how you're on about it.", that didnt.
and also, indie is hardly hyped up. i quite like it.
I didnt class them as indie, i'd class them more as dance if im honestt.
bloc party
*VOMITTTTTTTTTTTTT*
it is veryvery hyped up. i love it anyway.
I know you didnt Ben, and yeah it was my mate.
i was just saying that i didnt say it.
It's hardly hyped up in my area, well not the whole of Liverpool, Just Waterloo/Crosby.
pretty much the same.
i got called sad for listening to it. and i was like:
"yeah, thats right im sad :D"
scissor sisters are pop/glam rock
in my school, all that any boy ever listens to is indie.
lmao, i was watching some indie music channel and it had orson on it
Actually, they are on an independent label.
It isn't new at all actually.
I'll clear up a few things since Im very into the whole indie scene: Indie can be seen as 2 things. One is "independent label", which technically isnt a genre, rather just an idea. Even the most mainstream-sounding artists can be indie if they are on an indie label. However, there are many bands that are considered indie, even though they are on a major label, and that usually means that they used to be on an indie label (bands such as Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, etc.) Sometimes it just means they sound like they should be indie (Coldplay) . Because while it isnt a real genre, it does have an odd pattern and style, usually consisting of things that are seen as different or out of the norm.
indie is a now a genre so stop this ******** about indepedant. It has amde itself a genre.
Fratellis are. Arctic Monkeys are. Kaiser Chiefs could be. Hard-Fi are.
indie's the best one out there imo.
I hate indie.
