Remove This Rule.

A33. Do not post on the forum using a different language. - Posting in any language other than English is not allowed (this does not apply to coding languages in the web design forums). There are some exceptions such as "Merci", "Au revoir", "Bonjour", "Ciao" or any other well known basic words. This rule does not apply to the foreign languages forum nor VIP sub-forums.

That is so stupid. I just saw some guy get an infraction in his birthday thread for saying 'Today I am 16' in German (here). Seriously, this is the worst rule ever. Some of you will reply 'Why DO we need to post in a different language anyway?' Well, why DON'T we need to post in a different language? Some people enjoy it, it gives us something to do and helps others learn. :S Also, if it does no apply in the VIP sub-forum section (which every user can see anyway) why should it apply anywhere else?

I agree that in a serious thread asking a question, a user should not post an answer in a different language that hardly anyone is going to understand. But if this rule does get removed and that is the case, then it should be classed as a pointless post.

Also, on another note. I've noticed a few moderators giving people infractions for breaking the rules, editing their post to put 'Edited by ______: Please do not break the rules, etc' but not actually removing the part of the post that breaks the rules. If it breaks the rules and you just give them an infraction, that won't solve anything. They will still be breaking the rules because their post will still be there. Sort this out.

I feel if someone posts a whole thread in arabic or french or w/e then yeah , they should get an infraction unless they provide a correct translation.
But for that thread , he shouldn't have been infracted.

I think you are right. I think it was originally introduced because some members were being less than complimentary about others in a foreign language but if this is suspected there is always online translators that can give you a gist of what's being said. =]

It's because not many people can understand foreign languages , the messages people type could mean anything , I think the rule is fine but in this certain incident i think it's a little unfair.

Yes, that is a rather odd rule. I suppose it's to stop people being rude in another language and the mods not picking it up becaus they don't understand the language. I agree with L!nk, who said that foreign languages are OK if translations are posted with it.

Agreed, its not hard to find translators online nowadays.

I think aslong as the person who has talked in another language shows us what it says in english, i think it should be ok.

This rule has its pro's and con's.

I admit i hate it when others speak other languages when i dont know what it means, gets on my wits.

I think that all-foreign language posts shouldn't be allowed, but if it was just a sentence in an otherwise English post, it should be allowed.

Yeah but why should we have to do that lol, wouldn't it be easyer for them just to speak English (as this is an English forum).

Maybe it should be allowed in the spam forum so people can have fun with it?

I think your right and this rule should be removed. Posting in other languages is if anything educational. If your in doubt there are thousands of translation websites that the moderators can use, and to be hounest most users post compliments in other languages, not harsh things.

It's in place becuase members used to post inappropriate things on the forum aimed at others, of which no one can actually tell what they are saying. No one should have to tolerate that then feel they have to go look it up to prove it.

Also, if one person does it, others will aswell, creating big convosations in a language that is not understandable and is hard to monitor and Moderate. This rule does not apply in the languages forum as thats the only place you should need to speak it, as this is an english/American based fansite.

There is not one single reason to post anything in another language on this English forum.

When this rule didn't exist, there were many many infractions given out to members who thought they were getting one over on the system by swearing or insulting other members in a different language. It's not a case of lazyness as translating takes what four clicks of a mouse? We're trying to cut down on infractions given out, since having this rule in place, member know they can't post in another language so therefore won't try to get away with rule breaking.

How come you can post in other languages in subforums then? I stick by what I said and still think this is a pretty stupid rule. If you're not going to remove it atleast reverse Jonathan's infraction and allow us to post in different languages at certain times and in certain situations.

While i can see why the rule is in place, I think there should be a bit of leniancy on the moderator's part. The example above seems extremely harsh. As has been said above, if whole threads are in a different language, move or close them because its impossible to moderate, but a sentence in a positively themed thread isn't going to kill anyone. Even if it was insulting, if no-one can understand it it isn't going to affect anyone is it?

I agree that siutation was a tad harsh and an edit would have sufficed, the warning has now been reversed. However, this rule will not be removed because of the reasons i stated above.

As someone said the rule was set up because people were swearing in foreign languages but doing that breaks the swearing rule anyway so why not allow them to speak another language anyway?

The rule probably won't be changed, for several reasons. The rule itself is aimed at posts like this:

Simple. Because languages are open to discussion, and also the way I got that translation was through the translation of a German speaking friend from another game. The Free Translation completely distorted it. Thus, a free translation also conveys some words in certain ways, and the user can contend that "OH WELL IN FRANCE THIS WORD ENT THAT BAD" or "I DIDN'T MEAN IT IN THAT SENSE". Its hard enough for a moderator to attempt to decide based on the nuances of the English language, but they don't need the nuances of another language on top of that.

If you give a short, succint sentence, with a translation provided (it may be checked for a *ballpark* guess of if its correct,) then it will be allowed. I don't suggest communicating with other members in another language for an extended amount, IE: more than one sentence, as problems can arise, especially due to misunderstandings, and mods would be allowed to infract in that case. If you wanted to keep it private use the PM system.

Anyway, that's why the rule is there :D
