Arguing with instructor...

Grrr I was so angry today! lol I was out on my 8th lesson and ended up shouting at my instructor.

I'd say I am doing quite well on my lessons and have got through a lot, considering I have only one manoeuvre left to do then just like builindg my confidence on them all...

Anyway, basically he has rearranged my lessons a few times simply cause the football has been on and stuff so I was kinda annoyed a bit with him in general, then he text me today saying he'd be a bit late. Also, a few times on my lessons I have made the odd mistake here and there, but I mean I've only had 8 lessons now so it is expected... At times though he seems to get a bit huffy and stuff if I make silly mistakes, and it just makes me worse cause it puts me under more pressure.

Then today, I was in a queue of traffic and was sitting in front of a pedestrian crossing. The queue began moving and he told me to go, even though the lights had just went amber... I was like go? He said yeh so I did and as I expected it went to red when I was like on the crossing... then he started pure shouting "STOP STOP" i was like :S so I tried and tried to brake...

Then he's like "WHY DIDN'T YOU BREAK? WHY DIDN'T YOU BRAKED?" and I was just like "eh because you told me to go even though you knew it was :S" he's like "NO YOU SHOULD HAVE BRAKED" so I was just like "Well I actually did try to..." n then he was like "NO YOU NEVER BRAKED" and was like quite mad lol.
I got really pissed off and I was just like "LISTEN, IM NOT PAYING YOU TO LOSE YOUR PATIENCE WITH ME. I'VE HAD 8 LESSONS AND I TRIED TO BREAK. I AM DOING MY BEST OKAY?"

After that he was kinda sucking up my *** a bit and was being all friendly again. lol

I was so mad though...

Basically I think he is quite a decent instructor as he has got me through a lot but I am just still working on my confidence and practise of the whole lot together... I don't think I should be having to put up with someone who is gonna lose their patience with me and give me such an attitude, I mean surely he should have it in his nature to understand I will make mistakes or are all instructors like this?lol

I've got a few more lessons booked with him anyway (another 7) and then I'll take it from there... but what do you think? I don't wanna have wasted money on these lessons by starting with a new instructor, but at the same time I don't wanna waste anymore money on him if it wont benefit me...

Since I've never taken the driving courses, does he mark you at all?

If he does, I'd re-arrange it. My sister got an amazing instructor that taught her exactly how to do everything plus some little tricks and stuff, she really enjoyed it. Driving is something you'll use for the rest of your life, so you might aswell get a good instructor.

If he's try to suck up now though, I guess he's good. What a push-over though ;)

Wasn't he trying to make you do a controlled stop? If so he should have told you well before!

It sounds like you need a new instructor. :(

When I did controlled stops, he told me about 5 mins before, and said he would give me about 1 seconds notice and to hit the brake as hard as I could. I stopped after about 20 feet lol. :(

Nah I have done my emmergency stop already and am fine with it, and you don't do that just randomly in a queue of traffic with no need haha. And yeh he warned me beforehand when it was that...

This was just cause I went through a red light, even though it wasn't really my fault!

Even if it was my fault though, I don't really think it's right he gets all huffy and stuff... I meen I am trying my best and it's not like I'm incapable or anything lol.

I only have reverse parking to do as a manoeuvre then just increase my general road confidence...

why didn't he brake himself?

If you're learning to drive, you should at least have a driver whos going to be calm and what not when your not doing something right and then tell you after what you did wrong. If they just sit there yelling at you, it'll make you worry more and be under pressure.

You should get a new instructor unless your almost done.

my instructor was a right laugh. one time we were turning onto the highway and he was like GET UR SPEED UP and i was like I'M TRYINGGG (I had the petal all way to the floor) and the car was revving really high, but not going fast.

his briefcase was resting on the brake!

If you like him, then at least try to stay with him (unless he gets into another hissy fit with you, then you should definatly switch)

My instrutor told me to move when clearly I shouldn't, or I saw something he couldn't. I just nod and agree and carry on. Is he kinda old?

The UK ones have dual control which is another set of pedals on the passenger side.

Well it sounds like to me your instructor is no good at teaching. He is displaying all the characteristics of a terribly bad ADI and i would advise you that if things don't improve dramatically next lesson, for example, him not shouting, getting aggressive, arguing with you and making you feel awkward in the car then a change of ADI is in need. After all you are the paying customer, if he shouts then your business can and will easily go elsewhere.

Your the paying customer, so why put up with it? Driving is a life skill, and the car is all after a machine that can and will kill you if you are not taught to drive properly.

I've been with my instructor since November last year now, I've had 26 hours of lessons and he has never ever, raised his voice, argued with me, or got aggressive with me making mistakes in any way shape or form. I mean on my third lesson i mounted the curb and nearly hit a lamp post, all he did was laugh and tell me to get it back onto the road.

If you do change ADI, then when you ring ask if you can have a one off assessment lesson with them and explain the circumstances you are in. Most decent Adi's will accept, this will give you a chance to see if you like the driving instructor before you put more money into driving, and you are under no obligation to book further lessons with them, this would also mean you could keep your current progress without the loss of money as they will be able to see where you are up to.

My advice, change ADI immediately, cancel the further 7 lessons and get a refund if you have paid them in advance. You'll feel much better and you'll be glad when you do find the right instructor, you'll be much more at ease and so much more confident in your driving.


Also driving on the motorway in the UK is not permitted as a learner with a provisional driving license. One its dangerous, and two you don't go on motorways on your practical test so it would be useless to you to learn until after you pass your test. You can however go on motorways when you have got a full license and many people go on motorways when doing the pass plus course to learn how to drive on them safely and gain more driving experience.

Yea if you're doing Pass Plus then you get motorway lessons aswell, I didn't think they took you onto a motorway so fast though :S

Had a lesson this morning and it went great. I stalled like once but that was only real problem and he was supportive and fine through it...

I wanted to learn how to drive a standard, but the driver training school doesn't let people learn on standard cars because of too much "wear & tear"

My mom taught me on a brand-new VW Jetta (5-speed). I don't know if anyone has experienced a Jetta clutch, but they are EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY sensitive, if you don't get it right, you stall, especially with a diesel.

My mom isn't the most patient person in the world, so when I'm stalling the car numerous times, she's not exactually sympathetic, and she likes to yell, curse, and laugh when you make a mistake. NOT THE PERSON YOU WANT TEACHING YOU!

My car has a sensitive clutch, there's not buch space between the bite and stalling so it often happens to me. You get used to it after a while though. :)

Learner drivers are not allowed on the motorway, also pass plus is done after you have passed your exam.

I'm lucky, my dads a driving instructor so I don't have the hassle with not getting on with the instructor or lesson fees:8

I totally agree! If I had learned how to drive a standard before I got the accord, it would be a standard, not an automatic!

My Driver instructer was just like this he used to have major goes at me but I guess I'm not as brave as you and kind of just put up with it. He'd like say 'WHY IS THIS GUY BEHIND US UP OUR ***' and i'd say 'erm because I'm going the speed limit' and he's be like 'NO BECAUSE YOU'RE TO SLOW SPEED UP NOW' and I'll be like :rolleyes: fine then he'd be like 'DO YOU WANT TO BE PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE' lmao so I couldn't win he was always extreamly obessesed with people passing the first time so the slightest little thing I did wrong would have a huge go at me urrg I hated him lol but at least he got me through first time I guess...so if you want to avoid this instructer

It's terrible when you want to go in 4th but you end up in 2nd. It slows you down a hell of a lot and gives the person behind no notice of doing so!

I wouldnt want a standard in the city.. all the stoping and starting! My brothers
car will start in 2nd, but the jetta, forget it!

God bless Ford Fiesta clutches and gear boxes, that's all I have to say :P The gear stick isn't soft so it barely wiggles so when you're in gear you know which one you're in and the biting point is really obvious, and gives you allows you alot of space to hit it. The Honda Civic which my mum owns has a weird biting point. You hit it the moment you touch the accellerator which is really annoying, so you either stall easily or make the start off uncomfortable.

I wouldn't worry about the driving instructor, as I said, they do have moody times and it's only short term moodyness.

my brothers bmw 3-series is so much easier than the jetta!!! The jettas shifter is really short too which makes it harder! I wish I got a standard accord! I do a lot of highway driving so it would be perfect!

You should get another instruction for a start. Most Instruction cars now-a-days have duel controls, so I think by the way you explained it, he doesn't like you very much. Scottish instructors are all the same :D
