Approval for mobiles on aircraft

The use of mobiles on planes flying in European airspace has been given approval by UK regulator Ofcom.

It has issued plans that will allow airlines to offer mobile services on UK-registered aircraft.
The decision means that mobiles could be used once a plane has reached an altitude of 3,000m or more.
But airlines keen to offer the services must still satisfy other regulators about how the hardware will be used.


Service charge

Ofcom's decision comes out of a consultation exercise that began in October 2007.
The decision to offer the services now falls to individual airlines. However, there are other regulatory hurdles to overcome before the technology is considered to be fully approved.
The European Aviation Safety Agency needs to approve any hardware that would be installed in aircraft to ensure that it did not interfere with other flight systems.

I thought that the real reason your not aloud it on is because it could annoy other passengers?

Like hospitals..

I also think that sometimes they don't allow it incase you let go of it and it smacks another passenger in the head of something alike.

Well I can last 4 hours on a plane without checking a text haha!

They interfere with other radio stuff, and there's some belief that they can make gas blow up

I think their going to have some kind of signal thing on the plane, I read that Emirates were planning it on the A380 and cabin crew will be able to turn the signal off to stop you from using your phones. It will be restricted in the night time too.

The reason mobiles haven't been approved on aircraft before is because scientists proved it could mess with navigational and communicational equipment onboard - However, I've used my phone on countless flights, when flying on my own in a PA28 and on Ryanair 737-800's and not yet has it messed with anything.

Although Offcom have given it the go-ahead, the CAA still haven't and at the end of the day they're incharge and it's up to them.

Its not messed with anything on the Ryanair that you're aware of ;)

The flight deck would be straight onto the PA asking passengers to double check that mobile phones are switched off! :)

Same thing though, if it doesn't mess with the equipment (which is nearly identical) on the aircraft I fly, it's not going to mess with the one on board Ryanair - Or any other airline for that matter.

So they say.. So thats just the same as stood next to the ILS transmitter at an airport making a phone call, it wouldn't do anything :|

that'd be such a scam, having to pay to use your own mobile phone, regardless of where you are it's still megamega scam...
