LMAO.
"Airband Scanner"
My parents used to have one of those when I was about 8, they were fun at the time.
is it the same idea as a police scanner?
er...a what scanner? Explain?:S
''A what scanner?''
An Aviation Scanner, aka an aeroplane scanner. You can go to the airports and listen in to what the control tower is saying, and other aircrafts about the vacinity.
Metric, yes it basically works like a police scanner, except you tune into the APP, GND, & TWR frequency.
The one I had could do all those and also pick up landline phone calls until they made it all digital!
I have one, cost me about £80 lol. Had it a few months, can't work the bugger or out so it's stuffed in a drawer.
Yeah, they are tricky. I've had it working and such but I can either a) never understand them completely b) know who/what it is, lol.
They're meant to be illegal, however i don't think anybody has been arrested for using one in like ages.
I have one of those police radar scanners in my car, it's not overly accurate though =(
I can only know the Police scanners etc are illegal.
DUHJay: If you ever want to go to your local airport, and wish to listen to the tower, give me a shout and I'll give you a hands up on the frequency (Y)
@ Sam above
alternatively...
http://www.google.co.uk search "AIRPORT NAME HERE FREQUENCIES"
(:
How is Sam being Sam? :S
I only told the guy if he needed any frequency, to give me a shout so shut up.
I bought a Maycom AR-108 from Maplin the other day (Y) £39.99
I'm listening to London Control as we speak.
Nice Adam ;]
The scanners themselves aren't illegal, but listening to the Aircraft frequencies are.
Ok?. Manchester Police control the aviation viewing park every day, many people are their with scanners in their hands, or even in cars. (They look in cars and so on) we have never been stopped. If they were illegal they wouldn't sell them at the shop their either. So what the hell?
Matt, it's actually illegal to listen to broadcasts which are not intended for public, which includes ATC frequencies.
However, the CAA (Civil aviation authority) has stated on more than one occasion it will not support the prosecution of any aircraft enthusiast listening to any UK Civil ATC frequency providing they are not using that information for anything other than personal enjoyment.
I have a R/T licence so for me to listen to any ATC frequency in the UK and transmit on them frequencies is perfectly legal - I can legally own and use a transceiver where as general public cannot.
Well this seems like a must-have item!
Anyone else realised that people here are claiming to listen to emergency frequency's when they are all digital now? XD Also I have a full desktop one that's MODE-S enabled. (The joy's of NATS :D)
Yeah I have one, but same with Matts it picks up Police etc,
I could pick up the copters, flying around by my house XD
I think they're not illegal to own, but if you listen to things which your not supposed to.. by
"hacking" your way in.. then it is.
My brother had a police scanner and he tuned into some pedophile trying to chat him up.
Lanzagrote you mean. That place is awful.
