Are Pringles a Crisp?

It has been ruled that the popular Pringles crisp is in fact not a Potato Crisp a high court judge has ruled.
So lets look at the arguments why the Pringle is not a crisp...
+ The pringles packaging is so odd, being in a tube that the product can not be a crisp.
+ A pringle contains less than 50% potato therefore it is not a crisp
+ The pringle shape is uniformed/strict unlike normal crisps
So whats the impact of this decision?
+ Pringles are no longer a crisp therefore they are no longer subject to 17.5% VAT charge. This will make more money for the manufacturers which will ultimately leed to lower prices for consumers.

There was a similar thing with Jaffa Cakes and a decision over whether they're a biscuit or a cake. I can't remember which way it was ruled (I think biscuit though) but that also made a difference to tax laws.

Does the courts have nothing else better to do than decide if pringles are crisps or not?

If i remember rightly they are now a biscuit, and biscuits dont have to pay VAT like crisps do.

I always thought the crisp was the potato part, not the tubing :rolleyes:

Yes but apparently if it contains less than 50% potato its not a crisp, the majority need to be potato to be called a crisp.
Im not sure but the point is that now they don't have to pay VAT, which will allow pringles to under cut other "crisp" manufacturers.
